Dirtbag Party Theme: The Cook-Off
INVITATION TO THE DIRTBAG COOK-OFF
WHO: Dirtbags, Outdoor Educators, Climbers, ANYONE hanging around a campground, College Students on a Semester Course, etc.
WHAT: Break into groups and cook the best meal you can with whatever you have left in your cooler, food bin, bear box, or stuff sack. Ideas for cook-off groups, or pairs, include: climbing partners, people living out of the same car, or people sharing campsites. The best cook-off I have been a part of took place in the Red Rocks group sites with outdoor educators from five different companies. The cook groups were a combination of climbing partners and co-workers; the cook-off commenced at 6:15 p.m., with tasting and voting scheduled for an hour after start time. We had about seven different cook groups, and the entrees included Dirtbag Risotto (made with 85% dumpster-pulled products), Macaroni with Goat Cheese and Red Wine, Coconut Curry Stir-Fry, and a variety of pasta dishes.
WHEN: Anytime that you have a large group of willing, hungry people hanging around. The night before a rest day on a climbing trip works well, or the evening before re-supply on a backpacking or mountaineering or rafting or climbing or backcountry skiing course, or trip.
WHERE: Mountains. Deserts. Rivers. Canyons.
WHY: Just another excuse for a party.
